Cambridge soundworks mc2004/1/2024 ![]() Cambridge includes two color-coded multipin cables-one wire runs between the receiver/DVD player and the subwoofer the other runs from the sub to the speaker (each cable is 12 feet long). The SurroundWorks 200's setup chores won't intimidate even the greenest of home-theater novices. The remote is pretty average overall our main gripe was that the tiny volume buttons should have been bigger and more accessible. Since it runs as cool as the proverbial cucumber, you can stash it inside a cabinet without fear of overheating. The 200 combines a single-disc CD/DVD player, an amplifier, and a receiver into one slim component measuring 2.5 inches high, 17 inches wide, and 14.5 inches deep. The matching gray subwoofer is a mere 11.2 inches high, 10 inches wide, and 13 inches deep, yet its little MDF (medium-density fiberboard) cabinet feels nice and solid. Rear keyhole slots allow for easy wall mounting. The speaker's concave front and side panels house special drivers, so to produce surround effects, you need to leave the sides unobstructed. The single speaker measures 4.5 inches tall, 15 inches wide, and 7 inches deep-about the size of a compact center speaker in a full 5.1-channel speaker system. People buy single-speaker surround systems to save space, and the Cambridge SoundWorks SurroundWorks 200 system is commendably petite. Best of all, the 200 provides sound comparable to that of some of the best virtual-surround systems we've tested here at CNET. The company isn't kidding when it calls the SoundWorks simplified-hooking up the audio portion simply requires plugging in two color-coded wires. Motorola digital TV box (AT&T broadband cable)Cambridge's "surround sound, simplified" system, the $1,000 SurroundWorks 200, features an A/V-receiver/DVD-player combo, a single compact speaker, and a powered subwoofer. When you have 5+ speakers hook up, you'll need the juice. My Sony STR-DE445 A/V receiver is just not doing it justice. Give it a try.įolks, I also highly suggest a very clean amp/receiver for this speaker. Furthermore, CSW has a full range of speakers that can satisfy the majority of Americans out there. I think that consumer values and support should be considered when purchasing expensive electronics. I was treated very well by their rep., unlike at Bestbuy where I was always ignored. Without further manure, I would like to advocate that CambridgeSoundworks (CSW) does good business. Moreover, since I don't have any Newton speakers (like the compact MC200 or MC50), I think matching will be better with the centerstage any my larger/older speakers. With voices (especially males), the centerstage was deeper and I like that more so I end up buying the centerstage. At high volumes, I start to hear hissing at the Centerstage, but the MC300 was still static-free. ![]() The Centerstage has more bass up front, but the MC300 has more tonal clarity. The new Newton MC300 center was also on sale when I went to buy the Centerstage, so I compared them. That isn't a fault of the speaker I think that a center stage shouldn't be used for music anyway. I think the higher frequency of this speaker is attenuated compared to my mains (Model Seventeen and Warfedale SP-83). I find that the timbre in this speaker is a little flat. I would use this centerstage for movies and watching TV, but probably not for music (especially classical or jazz). It is best used in dialog or where is a lot of vocals. It has nice dispersion, and the music with it is decent. It is deep in bass and crisp in the midrange. I just bought the speaker a couple of days ago and it is really nice. This center channel was CSW flagship center for a long time (over 5 years~!). The centerstage lists for $199, but now it is $129! What a deal. I just want to tell you folks who are interested in buying a center channel speaker that Cambridge Soundworks is now having a huge local store sale (not on the internet) as of September 1, 2001.
